"The selection pressures of hunter-gatherer existence have persisted for over 99 percent of human evolution."
E.O. Wilson, On Human Nature
"A schema is a configuration within the brain, either inborn or learned, against which the input of the nerve cells is compared. …the conscious mind …can fill in details that are missing from the actual sensory input and create a pattern in the mind which is not necessarily present in reality. In this way, the gestalt of objects—the impression…—is aided by the taxonomic powers of the schemata."
E.O. Wilson, On Human Nature
"Because the brain can be guided by rational calculation only in a limited degree, it must fall back on the nuances of pleasure and pain mediated by the limbic system and other lower centers of the brain."
E.O. Wilson, On Human Nature

Functionalism Notes

“Since mental states (beliefs, desires, being in pain, etc.)  are identified by a functional role, they are said to be realized on multiple levels; in other words, they are able to be manifested in various systems, even perhaps computers, so long as the system performs the appropriate functions. While computers are physical devices with electronic substrate that perform computations on inputs to give outputs, so brains are physical devices with neural substrate that perform computations on inputs which produce behaviours.”

“Psychofunctionalists view psychology as employing the same sorts of irreducibly teleological or purposive explanations as the biological sciences. Thus, for example, the function or role of the heart is to pump blood, that of the kidney is to filter it and to maintain certain chemical balances and so on—this is what accounts for the purposes of scientific explanation and taxonomy. There may be an infinite variety of physical realizations for all of the mechanisms, but what is important is only their role in the overall biological theory. In an analogous manner, the role of mental states, such as belief and desire, is determined by the functional or causal role that is designated for them within our best scientific psychological theory. If some mental state which is postulated by folk psychology (e.g. hysteria) is determined not to have any fundamental role in cognitive psychological explanation, then that particular state may be considered not to exist . On the other hand, if it turns out that there are states which theoretical cognitive psychology posits as necessary for explanation of human behaviour but which are not foreseen by ordinary folk psychological language, then these entities or states exist.”

“It turns out the brain in love looks strikingly similar to one on drugs like cocaine! Find out what drives love, and why we simply love being in love.”

"Pleasures put you to sleep because you’re satisfying life’s intentions of survival and evolution; anxiety and pain build up in your own brain in order to maintain this seeking of biological pleasures. When I mean pleasures, I mean love (which it’s end is reproduction), food (survival), even the seeking and gaining of power is a pleasure because it secures the first two. This is our cage, this is reality, this is life."

"If you see things from a darwinian perspective, your parents love you because you’re going to transmit their genes to the next generation and probably your girlfriend or boyfriend loves you because of the same thing. This concept is not to be felt or seen because our senses are subjective, it works indirectly in your life as a law of nature. We carry genes that don’t really care about us, they just want to get on with the extension of life. All our interactions, feelings, thoughts are biological, and they only serve one purpose: evolution."

Pleasure principle (psychology)

In Freudian psychology, the pleasure principle is the psychoanalytic concept describing people seeking pleasure and avoiding suffering (pain) in order to satisfy their biological and psychological needs. Furthermore, the counterpart concept, the reality principle, describes people choosing to defer gratification of a desire when circumstantial reality disallows its immediate gratification. In infancy and early childhood, the id rules behavior by obeying only the pleasure principle. People in that age would only seek for immediate gratification in order to reduce their urges such as hunger, thirst or even sex.[3]
Maturity is learning to endure the pain of deferred gratification, when reality requires it; Sigmund Freud proposes that “an ego thus educated has become ‘reasonable’; it no longer lets itself be governed by the pleasure principle, but obeys the reality principle, which also, at bottom, seeks to obtain pleasure, but pleasure which is assured through taking account of reality, even though it is pleasure postponed and diminished”.

"The meaning of ‘knowledge’: here, as in the case of ‘good’ or ‘beautiful,’ the concept is to be regarded in a strict and narrow anthropocentric and biological sense. In order for a particular species to maintain itself and increase its power, its conception of reality must comprehend enough of the calculable and constant for it to base a scheme of behavior on it. The utility of preservation … stands as the motive behind the development of the organs of knowledge — they develop in such a way that their observations suffice for our preservation. In other words …: a species grasps a certain amount of reality in order to become master of it, in order to press it into service."
Friedrich Nietzsche (The Will to Power, 480)
"

The more you know about the universe, the more you’re amazed by its beauty, complexity and interconnectedness. To know that the cells of your body are continually replaced, nurtured, meaning you’re not the same guy you were last week. And these cells take in food, that at the same time that food probably consisted of plants that went through life processes like recollecting energy photons from the Sun which is powered by Helium and Hydrogen. All matter and energy is recycled, eventually our body will desintegrate and consciousness will cease, but we will fall with the rest of the energy of the universe, until all the energy reassembles again to create another spontaneous Big Bang and start it all over again in a eternal sequence. That means everything that has happened, has happened before, because of the eternal sequence postulated by String Theory. The probability of something happening like life is irrelevant because you have a whole eternity for the event to happen. This means also that I have written this sentence an eternal number of times!

The universe is amazing, stay curious my friends.

"This ecophilosophy recognises that every increase in total human biomass must equal an equivalent decrease in the biomass of other living creatures. The more humans there are on the planet the less room there is for seaweed, kauri trees, grizzly bears and grasshoppers. As the human population skyrockets 200 species of plant and animal are becoming extinct everyday."
We are one, not separate from the rest of the world. We have evolved together, and been together always in the form of biomass/organic matter.
"It turns out your conscious mind — the part you think of as you — is really the smallest part of what’s happening in your brain, and usually the last one in line to find out any information."

Just like the heart or lungs, the mind is going and going all by itself.
Take 5 minutes to watch the mind and see for yourself.
If you try to stop thinking it just starts right back up again.
Everything it thinks and does, it’s doing on it’s own.
You have almost no control over it.
You can’t stop it by controlling it, but you can (eventually) stop it by watching it non-judgmentally.
You are not the body and its senses. You are not the mind and its thoughts. You are the silent Awareness that is aware of them.
Now the big question is… Do you want to wholely and completely BE that Awareness of profound peace, silence and happiness, which is the real you?
Or do you prefer and enjoy the drama and suffering created by the ego/mind? (many people do, but that’s because of the ego/mind)
Knowingly or unknowingly, this is why people practice meditation.
That which you are knowingly or unknowingly seeking, is causing you to seek.
It’s calling you to Itself. It’s calling you back Home from whence you came.
Do you want to “remember” who/what you actually are?
